How to Travel Through the Dunes With Bikes Instead of Sandworms

December 23, 2025

Exploring Hilton Head Island through biking is a unique and memorable experience that you need to try out.

Have you seen the new Dune movies? Timothée Chalamet looks so cool riding those giant sandworms of his desert planet. There are none of those roaming around in Hilton Head Island (Thank goodness!) and there’s a cooler option to go through the sand dunes there.

That option is biking. You can experience the varied scenery offered by the island while traveling at your own pace. You can stop and enjoy the scenery when you like it or just take a break when you see a nice shade. It’s going to be a different kind of adventure.

When to Go Biking

Early mornings and low tide provide the ideal conditions, when the sand is firm and the beach feels almost endless. As cyclists ride along the water’s edge, the sound of crashing waves and the salty ocean breeze create a calm, rhythmic backdrop. Pelicans glide overhead, shorebirds gather near the surf, and dolphins are occasionally visible just offshore, adding moments of surprise to the journey.

Through the Dunes

The sand dunes themselves are a defining feature of Hilton Head’s landscape. These natural barriers protect the island from storms and erosion, and biking near them offers a front-row view of sea oats, beach grasses, and native plants that stabilize the shoreline. Riders are reminded to stay on designated paths and beach routes, helping preserve these fragile ecosystems for future generations.

“I loved these salt rivers more than I loved the sea... Something in me was congruent with this land, something affirmed when I witnessed the startled, piping rush of shrimp or the flash of starlight on the scales of mullet.”

Pat Conroy,  The Lords of Discipline

Bike Paths and Forests

Many routes connect the beachfront to shaded bike paths that wind through maritime forests, creating a dynamic ride that shifts from open coastal views to cool, tree-lined trails. The contrast makes the experience feel varied and engaging, even for longer rides. Hilton Head has a lot of  bike-friendly infrastructure that ensures smooth transitions between beach access points and paved paths throughout the island.

Hilton Head Biking Tips

Here are a few tips to remember if you want to try biking though Hilton Head.

  • Check the tides: Ride at low tide when the sand is firm and easier to bike on.
  • Use the right bike: Wider tires or a beach cruiser make riding on sand more comfortable.
  • Stay on designated paths: Protect the dunes and vegetation by avoiding restricted areas.
  • Bring water and sun protection: Shade can be limited along the beach, especially midday.
  • Watch for wildlife and pedestrians: Share the beach respectfully with walkers and shorebirds.
  • Know the connections: Use Hilton Head’s bike paths to easily transition between beach and forest trails.
